Dr. Thorsten Pötzsch

Chief Executive Director, BaFin

Dr. Thorsten Pötzsch is the Chief Executive Director of Securities Supervision at the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). He is a member of the Board of Supervisors and Management Board of ESMA as well as a member of the IOSCO Board. Since December 14, 2022, Dr Pötzsch has been the chair of the new Sustainability Standing Committee (SSC) at ESMA. Prior to his current position, Dr. Pötzsch was the Chief Executive Director of the Resolution Directorate at BaFin for 4 years. Before joining BaFin’s Directorate he held various leadership positions at the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Chancellery and the Federal Ministry of Justice being responsible inter alia for financial markets regulation and national and international financial markets. Dr. Pötzsch holds a doctorate degree in law (Dr. jur.) from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich and served as a lecturer at the University of Surrey (UK). He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Banking Law and Banking (JBB).
